Gingerbread Man (fractured)

This is my fractured Gingerbread Boy story. Basically, you substitute random animals and the kids laugh hysterically. Here is a rough script:

*Have all the kids stand in front of you and your flannel board. Tell them all to take three steps back so they're not breathing in your face*

I'm going to tell you a story that some of you may know about a gingerbread boy! Whenever I say "run, run as fast as you can, you can't catch me I'm the gingerbread man" you have to run as fast as you can (practice running in place)

Ok, let's start the story. Once upon a time, there was a little old man and a little old woman and they decided they needed a tasty treat. So they started mixing some ingredients in their mixing bowl (everybody stirs) flour, sugar, eggs, milk, and ginger! Then they rolled out the dough (everybody rolls) and slid it into the oven. When it came out, it was a tasty gingerbread boy. But he didn't wait to be eaten, he jumped off the table and ran out the door, yelling "Run Run etc." and the little old man and the little old lady ran after him.

By and by, he met a cat and the cat said "gingerbread boy, won't you slow down so I can taste you?" but the gingerbread man said "I've run away from a little old man and little old lady and I can run away from you!" and off he ran, saying "Run Run etc."

[Then he meets horse, then the rabbit, then the elephant, and then I pull out the dinosaur]

"Wait, he can't chase the gingerbread boy, he's extinct!" (discussion of what extinct means and he goes back in the folder)

[Then I pull out the whale/shark]

"Wait, he can't chase the gingerbread boy, he can't breathe out of the water!" (discussion of fish vs. mammals)

Then the gingerbread boy met a fox. Now, the fox was clever. He didn't tell the gingerbread boy he wanted to taste him, he said "gingerbread boy, how will you get across that big river?" (discussion of density and what happens when cookies get wet) The gingerbread boy climbed on the fox's back and they started swimming across the river (everybody swims). As the water got deeper, the gingerbread boy said "fox, fox I'm getting wet" and the fox said "climb on my head!" so the gingerbread boy did. The water got deeper still and the gingerbread boy said "fox, fox I'm getting wet!" and the fox said "climb on my nose" so the gingerbread boy did. But as soon as he did, the fox tipped back his head and SNAP (clap hands) he ate that gingerbread boy. Because what is gingerbread? (kids all yell "it's a COOKIE") and what happens to cookies? (kids all yell "THEY GET EATEN")

I had to add that last bit b/c I once had a parent in storytime complain about the gingerbread boy getting eaten.
