Garden vs. Not Garden (sorting game)

I got the inspiration for this from Falling Flannel Boards I got a good variety of things, plus some trick questions, so the kids could not only sort into the two basic categories (things that grow, things that don't) but also have some discussion - what cardboard is made out of, etc.

Enormous Carrot

My idea for this was sparked from Stories with Ms. Jenna. I changed it from turnip to carrot because carrots are easier to make - and I'm not sure any of the kids even know what a turnip is! I've never eaten one myself. The carrot is covered by the brown piece of felt and I pulled it out bit by bit to show how it "grows". Yes, the mouse has a duct-tape ear.

Big Gray Elephant

The big gray elephant slowly walks.
She doesn’t make a sound.
She swings her trunk from left to right.
When she puts her feet on the ground.
Swing, swing, left and right,
She doesn’t make a sound.

I got this from Storytime Katie. Instead of using the elephant puppet she had as a craft, I handed them out to the kids to swing for the rhyme and then they got to keep them.

I dream of an elephant by Ami Rubinger

I made 20 elephants (I cut duplicates of some colors) so I'd have enough for all the kids to put them up. I got this idea from Narrating Tales of Preschool Storytime
